To help protect this fragile environment, only 400 tourists are allowed on the island at any one time. This is a boon for travellers who want to experience all the different Lord Howe Island activities without the crowds. Locals included, there will never be more than 800 souls on the island on any given day.

Since everything on this six mile (10km) long island is so close together, biking is the preferred method of transport and one of the most popular leisure activities. Additionally, there is a nine-hole golf course, lawn bowling and several hiking trails for those who want to spend time on land.

The sea offers even more activities on Lord Howe Island. Its warm clear waters are ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving to explore hidden shipwrecks and an incredibly healthy coral reef system. The steady winds that blanket the island create ideal windsurfing and kite-boarding conditions.

The waters that surround Lord Howe Island are teeming with fish that make for some of the finest deep-sea fishing in the region. Thanks to the surrounding marine park and no commercial fishing for miles around, the sheer diversity of fish and environments make this area one of the world’s top spots for angling.

Lord Howe Island is one of Australia’s premier destinations for bird watching. There are 14 different species of sea bird that breed here in flocks of hundreds of thousands to complement the 130 other permanent bird residents and migratory visitors.
